Mosquito dunks
Mosquito dunks are yet another weapon for fighting those annoying and dangerous creatures. This product is intended to get rid your surroundings of mosquitoes even before they grow up to become adults and is usually used as a part in integrated mosquito elimination programs.
Each mosquito dunk is a small solid donut shaped piece of concentrated mosquito killing biocontrol agent, also called larvicide because of its ability to kill mosquito larvae. Most popular larvicides used for mosquito control are Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and Bacillus sphaericus (B. sphaericus). They have been used for decades by organic farmers to control crop-eating insects and by the World Health Organization (WHO) to kill mosquitoes without using dangerous chemical pesticides.
Mosquito dunks float on the water surface and active material (Bti) is released at the surface. Later it gradually settles to the bottom where it is eaten by mosquito larvae growing there. Mosquito dunks contain no dangerous chemicals and the larvicide will not harm people, pets, wildlife or fish.
Each Dunk will effectively treat up to 100 square feet of surface water regardless of depth. Constant dose of Bti is released for about 30 days and mosquito larvae continuously ingest it, which produces a chronic infection, killing larvae. Reappearing larvae will also be killed and so you will be rid of breeding mosquitoes for entire season. However, continuous placement of dunks is needed.
Mosquito dunks are great for use in water gardens, flower pots, old automobile tires, bird baths, rain gutters, decorative ponds, ditches, roof gutters or wherever water accumulates. If that water reservoir dries out, mosquito dunks will start working again when water is back.
According to U.S. EPA: “Killing mosquito larvae with microbial larvicides before they emerge as adults can reduce or eliminate the need for ground or aerial application of pesticides to kill adult mosquitoes. Duration of effectiveness depends primarily on the mosquito species, the environmental conditions, the formulation of the product, and water quality”.
For best protection against mosquitoes, several measures (fogging, mosquito repellents, personal insect repellents, nets etc.) should be applied, mosquito dunks being an integral part.
